Top 5 Railfanning Hotspots in Chicago

Discover the top 5 railfanning hotspots in the Chicago area, including Rochelle Railroad Park, Joliet, and Galesburg — some of the busiest rail corridors in North America.

Top 5 Railfanning Hotspots in Chicago

Chicago is the undisputed railroading capital of North America. More freight tonnage passes through the Chicago terminal area than any other city on the continent, and nearly every Class I railroad operates here. For railfans, it's as close to paradise as it gets.

Here are five of the best public spotting locations in and around the Chicago area.

1. Galesburg, Illinois — BNSF Mainline

Location: Seminary Street overpass, Galesburg, IL 61401

About 180 miles southwest of Chicago, Galesburg sits along one of BNSF's busiest mainlines in the country. Trains roll through constantly — often at intervals of just a few minutes during peak hours.

  • What to Expect: High-speed intermodal trains, manifest freight, coal trains, and the occasional Amtrak California Zephyr and Southwest Chief
  • Best Times: Dawn and dusk for dramatic lighting; midday for maximum traffic volume
  • Parking: Street parking available along Seminary Street
  • Photography: The Seminary Street overpass offers excellent elevated angles
  • Amenities: Downtown Galesburg has restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance

2. Corwith Yard Area — CSX / Norfolk Southern

Location: Near West 47th Street and South Kedzie Avenue, Chicago, IL

The Corwith area on Chicago's south side is one of the most active freight corridors in the city. CSX and Norfolk Southern both operate heavily here.

  • What to Expect: Heavy freight operations, locomotive servicing movements, intermodal lifts
  • Best Times: Early morning through mid-morning
  • Safety Note: Stay on public streets and sidewalks only — this is an industrial area
  • Photography: Multiple public road crossings offer varied angles

3. Joliet, Illinois — BNSF & Union Pacific

Location: Collins Street area, Joliet, IL 60432

Joliet is legendary in the railfanning community. Two of the nation's busiest rail corridors — BNSF's Transcontinental and Union Pacific's main line — run parallel through town.

  • What to Expect: Constant traffic on both railroads; double- and triple-stack intermodal, grain trains, autos, and more
  • Best Times: Any time of day — traffic never stops
  • Parking: Public lots and street parking throughout downtown Joliet
  • Photography: Multiple grade crossings and public overpasses
  • Pro Tip: Bring a scanner. You'll hear dispatchers coordinating dozens of trains simultaneously

4. Rochelle Railroad Park

Location: 121 N. 9th Street, Rochelle, IL 61068

This is one of the most famous railfan parks in the entire country — and it's completely free. The park sits directly at the diamond where BNSF's main line and Union Pacific's main line cross at grade.

  • What to Expect: A train crossing the diamond on average every 20–30 minutes
  • Best Times: Any time — it's that busy
  • Amenities: Covered pavilion, restrooms, picnic tables, and a small gift shop
  • Photography: Elevated viewing platform gives excellent angles on the diamond
  • Family Friendly: One of the best spots to bring kids to the hobby
  • GPS: 41.9228° N, 89.0662° W

5. Geneva, Illinois — Union Pacific Metra Commuter Line

Location: Geneva Metra Station, 244 S. Third Street, Geneva, IL 60134

For those interested in commuter rail photography, Geneva's historic stone depot along the Union Pacific West Line is a beautiful setting.

  • What to Expect: Metra bi-level commuter cars, Union Pacific freight on shared tracks
  • Best Times: Morning and evening rush hours for maximum Metra frequency
  • Historic Interest: The Geneva depot is a beautifully preserved historic station
  • Photography: The station platform and adjacent public areas offer great shots
  • Parking: Municipal parking lots adjacent to the station

Tips for Spotting in the Chicago Area

  • Get a scanner — Chicago railroading moves fast, and a scanner gives you advance warning of approaching trains
  • Plan for delays — Chicago traffic can be brutal; add extra travel time
  • Layer up — Lake Michigan makes Chicago weather unpredictable year-round
  • Respect private property — The Chicago area has active railroad police who patrol regularly

Happy spotting — and welcome to the greatest railroad city on Earth!
